for good ground clearance it's possible to use  BMW rear axels  they are splitted.

So the BMW is independent rear suspension and rear drive.  I think some  Jaguars do the same thing.  I was thinking the corvet did also.   I know that the military Hummer as a setup sort of like that.

Now where are we supposed to be able to find those for under $500?

You could also look at these independent rear ends
Rover P6, Datsun (Nissan) 180B, Subaru AWD sedans and wagons, Daihatsu Feroza 4WD's and some Honda 4WD.
Not sure if you have these available everywhere but there are probably others out there as well.

Here in Finland there are a lot of them on the junkyard  both the 300 series
and the 500 series from the mid 80:s.

A Jaguar XJ6 rear is just like the BMW pictured except it has inboard disk brakes.  They are in demand due to this feature, there's one listed on ebay, complete from hub to hub for $500.  They can handle LOTS of power.

You might look at an Audi quattro. They have the front axle coming out of the sides of the transmission and the rear off of a drive shaft. They are full time fwd however. I have seen one and the package is very small and tight. The CV joints are the same as VW and will connect with Vw hubs mounted at your drive point on the walking beam. You could run the brake drum and redrill it for your chain drive or just cut the drum down and use it as a drive hub. I am just thinking out loud.

What I have been mulling over in the old noggin is taking a standard axle , cutting it down and adding a could of bearings and a sleeved flange to tube so the tandem drive assembly could pivot . Re-install the original bearing housing and then have the axle shaft supported on the outer tandem chain case by a flanged bearing . As I still have not gotten to the point I can make straight lines on my cad program If you need a drawing it will have to be in AmishCad 1.0 . Dan

I am not sure if they would be strong enough not to mention they would be much harder to find in ones local parts supplier.

Hi Gazza
Those axels should do it car axels are usable in many projects .

I think atv parts are harder to find and much more expensive then car parts
on the junkyard.
